Five Crowns recalls cantaloupes after test for salmonella

Five Crowns Marketing, Brawley, Calif., has recalled cantaloupes shipped to wholesalers, retailers and foodservice operators in 10 states after a lab test showed a positive result for salmonella.

The cantaloupes, shipped Nov. 4-13, were sent to Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, according to a Nov. 20 Five Crowns news release distributed by the Food and Drug Administration.

According to the release, a consignee conducted the Nov. 4 lab test, and all cantaloupes from the lot in question are included in the recall. No illnesses have been linked to the cantaloupes.

The company traced the cantaloupes to their destinations, according to the release, and customers who bought them are being notified, although the harvest and ship dates “indicate that the cantaloupes have now passed through the distribution chain with no reported illnesses.”

The cantaloupes, of various sizes, were packed in cartons under the Majesty label, but did not have individual labels. They have lot numbers of 198 2 or 198 3, packed on Nov. 4, Nov. 6 and Nov. 10, according to the release.

Five Crowns issued the recall out of “an abundance of caution,” according to the release.

Companies that bought the cantaloupes should contact Five Crowns at 760-344-1390.

Are you kidding me? A ten day pack period re-callled with some product 16 days out. Can you imagine that any of these melons are still sitting around in coolers. Whys is there always this 2 -3 week gap between distribution and recall? For fresh produce this delay is ludicrous This to me seems like just another CYA move.
