Exclusive rights to grow and market a new purple fingerling potato developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and three Northwest universities have been awarded to Klamath Basin Fresh Direct LLC, Merrill, Ore.

Klamath Basin Fresh Direct — an association of potato growers along the Oregon-California border — plans to change the name of the potato, now called the Purple Pelisse, according to a news release.

The association plans to grow the potato organically and market it to high-end supermarkets and restaurants as a spud that can be boiled, fried or roasted, said association chairman Dan Chin, in the release.
