Mango growers in Southwest Florida are enjoying a fruitful crop this year as the region prepares for the annual MangoMania Tropical Fruit Fair on Pine Island this weekend.
About 400 of the state's 2,000 acres of mangoes are in Lee County in the southwest part of the state, according to a Fort Myers News-Press report.
John Painter, who cultivates a dozen varieties of mangoes on 5 acres near Bokeelia, told the News-Press that his commercial crop is up 25% this year compared to 2008.
"This is the best crop I've had since prior to Hurricane Charley (in 2004)," he said.
