The Sesame Workshop, the organization responsible for the Sesame Street television show, is using a grant to study the impact of its Healthy Habits for Life initiative.

The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, which focuses on health and health care issues in the U.S., is helping fund the study, which will involve 13,000 bilingual Sesame Street Healthy Habits for Life: Child Care Resource Kits distributed to child-care providers in six states, according to a news release.

The goal of the program is to integrate healthy eating and activity into daycare settings for preschool children, according to a news release, as well as to be an information source for caregivers and parents. The study will help evaluate the effectiveness of the guide’s messages.

The 100-page guide includes strategies and activities that are meant to be part of children’s daily routines. It includes a DVD and companion activity book. Many of its components will be available at www.sesameworkshop.org/healthyhabits.

“During these early years, children can learn to like a variety of wholesome foods and develop healthy practices through repeated exposure, engaging in positive dietary practices, and having positive role models,” said Gary Knell, president and chief executive officer of New York-based Sesame Workshop, in the release.

Sesame Workshop and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced their partnership at the National Association for Family Child Care’s Annual Conference June 26 in Baltimore.
