Following what Star Produce is calling a “strategic partnership” with BC Hot House, some BC Hot House executives, including its president, are leaving the company to join Houweling’s Hot House Group.
Mike Reed, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Star Produce’s former vice president of marketing and business development, has taken the reins as president at BC Hot House, Langley, British Columbia. Brian Beggs, its former president, left mid-summer, and starts as chief marketing officer at Delta, British Columbia-based Houweling’s Sept. 7.

Western Growers, Irvine, Calif., wants to develop a “one-stop shop” for members to deal with diverse traceability, sustainability and food safety requirements.
The group wants to help members integrate elements of the three issues in a way that doesn’t cause them to replace what already has been done, said Hank Giclas, senior vice president of science technology and strategic planning.
Produce distributor Custom Pak has inked a deal to market vegetables grown in a new greenhouse facility in Mexico.
In a move that essentially creates a national marketing and promotion program for baby carrots, Bakersfield, Calif.-based Bolthouse Farms is spending an estimated $25 million to pit the carrots against junk food — and is asking competitors to join the initiative.

SUN VALLEY, Idaho — The average consumer today could go the rest of his life without consuming another fresh potato and be perfectly fine, Bruce Peterson told the audience at the 82nd annual Idaho Grower Shipper Association Convention.
Peterson, president of Bentonville, Ark.-based Peterson Insights, said he wasn’t trying to make Idaho potato growers mad. He was merely pointing out that potato marketers must bring a more sophisticated marketing strategy to motivate consumers to choose potatoes over Doritos, Oreo cookies and thousands of other choices.
